Gallery

Marcus Ashley Gallery has been part of the Lake Tahoe community for over twenty years — a family-owned gallery with a reputation for connecting collectors with work that actually moves them. I appear at the gallery to meet collectors in person and do dedication sketches in purchased works.

Welcome to Town · Edition of 75

    Time Has No Meaning
    Around Here

"The title comes from a dream. I was in the little town I grew up in in Wyoming and I got commandeered by someone. I watched just one atrocity happen after the other. At some point I ended up in a lounge, talking to one of the characters. I said, 'This was a ghost town a couple years ago.' He looked me square in the eye and said, 'Time has no meaning around here.' Then I woke up."

"I already had this idea for a train painting — from a morning in Alaska, going out to fish. Misty and foggy, the sun rising through the fog. It occurred to me that the light looked like a train coming through the mist. A big steam train in a river, in the middle of nowhere. Rusted out. Like a world that's gone. But the light on the train is still lit. Like it could come back to life."

"There are no hands on the clock face. Who knows what time it is."

Welcome to town · Edition of 75

    No More
    Half Measures

"The world's burning behind him — maybe he destroyed it, maybe he's just coming through it. But this is a rebirth into something new. Everything else is old and burning away."

"...don't go halfway with things. No half measures. You commit to it. You go forward and you don't look back."

"I modeled the horse after a Friesian — big, powerful, jet-black. The power is what I wanted. He's got a self-assuredness about him... He knows what he's doing."

Welcome To Town · Edition of 75 - 7 studio proofs

    Stay to
    the End

"There's contrasting elements — this menacing and dark character and then the softness of the flowers and white roses. I painted this after my cat of 15 years passed away and I watched him die of kidney disease. 'Stay to the end' was what that meant. His ears are silhouetted in here."

Grief is something we all go through. It feels like you're in a different timeline where the world is moving on without you and nothing stops. But we stay to the end for those that we love. Out of the death and the hurt, new things come up.
